Senior Director - Global IT Operations

A leading global insurer has a superb opportunity for a Senior Director of Global IT Operations who will oversee all aspects of core technology infrastructure, enterprise wide IT production operations and governance. Based in London, reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer and a member of the IT Leadership team, you will be a senior leader with vision and a track record in positively impacting IT operations across multiple regions.
With a total headcount of 65, the specific areas under your remit will include data center operations, platform services, network, database administration, service management and disaster recovery capabilities. This is for Global Insurance Operations spanning across 15+ countries and 70+ office locations. This position will be responsible for achieving targeted business outcomes by ensuring operational excellence and leading the execution of technology initiatives aligned with the business's strategic objectives.
What You'll Be Doing
Responsible for Global IT production operations and servicing strategy, including multi-year roadmaps, consistent with business strategy and technology vision. This includes serving as senior product manager for IT service management and automated monitoring and alerts across all enterprise technology and business applications.
Responsible for creating, organising and developing an IT workforce with the skills required to develop, manage, and fully deploy the technology requirements. You will also be focusing on evolving workforce maturity and talent to meet long-term needs.
Contributing to all new contracts and renewals associated with in-scope services and technology led by and in partnership with Global Procurement.
Responsible for researching and evaluating new technology, their implications and potential impact in enabling Markel's business needs.
Participating in strategic planning with senior business / IT leadership, ensuring technical infrastructure can anticipate and support business needs. This includes maintaining required staffing plans, including balancing the need for full-time staff vs. contractors.
Responsible for designing and recommending the appropriate technology solutions to support company policies and standards; partnering with various teams, such as Global Security, to implement the organisations technology plans.
Responsible for defining business operational requirements and ensuring customer satisfaction and service level delivery meets / exceeds expectation.
Accountable for overseeing critical risk management practices such as security patching, disaster recovery, contingency plans and cyber recovery, in collaboration with Global Security.
Dispensing technical advice, guidance, direction, and authorisation to carry out major technology plans and processes.
Represent in-scope technology and operational performance of IT in executive meetings and senior level steering committees regarding production operations, resiliency and disaster and cyber recovery.
Financial Management
Manage significant budget/assets within prescribed guidelines and ensure expenses align with business need. This includes preparing quarterly forecast and the annual budget for responsible cost centers within the guidelines prescribed.
Responsible for establishing meaningful, business-relevant metrics for technology investments, analysing those metrics, and taking required action to ensure appropriate spend.
There will be travel required for this role, up to 15%.
Our Must Have's
Extensive and proven management experience within a senior level technology position. Experience within Insurance would be plus.
Large scale / global technical delivery expertise.
Proven track record of driving and defining complex IT strategy.
Experience in managing multiple IT disciplines and systems.
Experience in Audit Disciplines, including SOX.
Strong business partnering skills, with a consultative approach combined with good interpersonal skills. Speaks persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; and is able to communicate sophisticated IT solutions to the business community in a manner that is easily understood.
Advanced analytical skills - ability to synthesise complex or diverse information; ability to use data/analytics combined with experience to solve problems, designs work flows and/or build procedures.
Adaptability - Manages competing demands; able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events
